Nearly two-thirds of all amputations can be avoided when the proper preventative foot care is taken. Studies show that making regular visits with a podiatrist, providing education on diabetes prevention, and wearing appropriate footwear are key contributors to reducing this type of lower extremity injury by as much as 80%. Cigarette smoking has significantly increased re-amputation risk in those who have already undergone an initial procedure; up to 25 times more than non smokers. Taking these simple steps will not only reduce painful consequences but also possibly save lives!
