Losing a limb is undeniably traumatic, affecting every
aspect of an amputee’s life. Fortunately, there are many rehabilitation
services and programs available to help them through this difficult process –
the so-called “team approach” or “integrated healthcare.” This
collaborative effort allows professionals from different backgrounds – physical
therapy, occupational therapy etc – come together in support of those
recovering. Dr Terrance Sheehan describes it as follows: ‘By having multiple
members on the team working for one purpose…a much greater outcome can be
achieved than if any single practitioner were to take on all aspects of care
without assistance.’ It’s clear that a unified front makes recovery more
successful and helps build hope for individuals affected by amputation! The
healing process for those struggling with limb loss is not just the
responsibility of one person, but a team effort. From their partner’s love and
care to that of dedicated medical professionals like nurses, therapists and
more – these individuals must come together in order to provide timely support
so this life-altering change can be tackled head on. This essential ‘team
approach’ encourages success as it lightens the load while creating an
atmosphere where progress flourishes quicker than ever before; bridging gaps
between what was expected prior and why having such collaborative help should
never be overlooked again! To help foster successful recovery, massage therapy
has been incorporated into amputee rehabilitation programs – providing an invaluable
service to those in need.
